san jose. 33 in livermore. and 41 degrees in oakland. by the afternoon, high pressure trying to sneak back in here. that area of low pressure that brought the stormy weather to the bay area yesterday making its way into southern california. so if you are headed that way, be prepared for that. but we are going to see that weak ridge building in and the temperatures going to warm up nicely today. a much milder finish to the day. yesterday it was cold! we had the winds blowing and the temperature in the upper 40s and low 50s. by the afternoon, as much as 11 degrees warmer outside about 60 in concord. 59 degrees in san jose and should stay dry. that's the latest. back to you. >> the winter chill put some snow in sight in the bay area. roberta gonzales made it to the top of mount hamilton in the kpix 5 mobile weather lab. she found several inches on the ground at about 4200 feet above sea level. snow caused problems in the foothills of the sierra.

there was a pile-up in tuolumne county. 100 cars and truck spun out of control in one crash on highway 49. another crash involved about 30 cars. and a tornado. >> we are going to have to hop out and lie in the ditch i hope you know that if it comes towards us. police car for day 2 of his bail hearing in south africa's capital. his defense team is trying to keep him out of jail before he goes on trial for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. prosecutors insist the runner is a cold-blooded killer who shot reeva steenkamp after an argument in the early hours of valentine's day. they say a witness heard nonstop shouting coming from pistorius's home before the shooting. the paralympic superstar known as the blade runner for his prosthetic legs says he was not wearing them the night of the killing. but a police detective says the bullets were fired down through the top of pistorius's bathroom door suggesting the athlete was using his artificial legs. pistorius said he thought he was shooting at a robber when he pumped four bullets through the locked door. but when he broke it down with a cricket bat, he realized he had shot steenkamp in the head,

arm and hip. prosecutors tell it differently saying the sprinter took time to put on his prosthetic legs walk across the room and then open fire on steenkamp who was hiding in the bathroom. family and friends buried the supermodel and law graduate on tuesday. pistorius says he was deeply in love with steenkamp and was filled with horror and fear as she died in his arms. tina kraus, cbs news. >> pistorius's lawyers say that the testosterone substance found inside the olympian's bedroom was an herbal remedy not a banned steroid. breaking news now in the east bay. a house on fire outside danville. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is on the scene in the diablo neighborhood with more. what can you tell us? >> >> reporter: that thankfully, the homeowner and his wife are okay. the fire department has it under control.

they got a call around 4:45 this morning. the resident in the home tells me that he and his wife woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of smoke and then they walked to the kitchen window and saw tons of it from the outside. he and his wife got out safely. they called the fire department and were able to respond within a few minutes. they got the fire under control. when i spoke with san ramon valley fire, the biggest concern is because it's a small apartment above a garage they were not able to get as many firefighters inside to fight it but they fought it from the outside. at this point, it is still early in the investigation and they don't know the cause. but right now it's all about mopping it up. the last time i spoke with the battalion chief he said they were trying to get a lot of that smoke that had gathered on the inside or in the inside of the apartment out so they could take a look and assess the damage and salvage some of the property that's inside. but again, at this point, they don't have a cause. i was told an investigator is

on their way to the scene. also we saw pg&e come here, as well. i'm sure they are coming here to turn off any gas or electric just to make sure that everything is okay here. cate caugiran, kpix 5. the coroner is working to identify a body found in san mateo county. a hiker stumbled across the remains at the purisima creek redwoods open space preserve on monday and called the sheriff. officials confirmed the remains were human. in monterey county, officials hope to learn today what caused the death of a 10 month old baby from castro dill. cadaver dogs found her remains in a field near salinas three days after the 10-month-old baby from castro valley was found missing. angel negron was taken by the boyfriend of the mother and he was arrested in los angeles. >> he gave us a general location of where the child might be found. >> a memorial has been set up in the field where the baby was found. city leaders in oakland are

giving the go-ahead to a few more weeks of extra police patrols from the chp. councilmembers voted last night to approve $162,000 to pay for the program for another two months. highway patrol has been supplementing the understaffed oakland police department at no charge since november. the agreement was scheduled to expire february 28. oakland is among several bay area police agencies hiring more officers. that's according to the "san mateo county times" which did a study of 13 bay area departments. it includes san jose, san francisco, and the local chp. it found over the past five years, the number of officers in the departments was reduced by 981. that's a loss of almost 13%. the new hiring is an attempt to get the number of officers back to earlier levels. search crews are still looking through the rubble of a missouri restaurant that was leveled by a natural gas explosion and fire. the blast happened during dinner yesterday evening in a

only one has been confirmed as a tornado so far. snow is flying over the grapevine between the san joaquin valley and l.a. this morning. they have just shut down interstate 5. if you are heading south, take note. a winter storm warning is in effect in the area until 10:00. you don't think in l.a. you'll hit snow but over the mountains -- >> i know. >> -- you get it hard. with more on that, let's check in with elizabeth. >> they just issued that sig alert within the first few minutes. southbound i-5 closed at grapevine and northbound is closed at parker road. in the bay area, we have our own problems now. northbound 880 approaching oak street. we have an injury crash blocking one lane. and a member of the kcbs phone force says it's stacked up from at least high street. past hegenberger expect brake lights. consider 580 as an alternate. to the maps and other live traffic cameras. this accident is clearing.

will keep providing extra officers to oakland. the city council last night voted to approve more than $160,000 to continue the program for another 60 days. chp has been supplementing the understaffed oakland police department at no charge since last november. the agreement was scheduled to end at the end of the month. people in one oakland hills neighborhood have come up with their own plan to deal with the city's understaffed police force. >> well, they are actually paying for private security patrols out of their own pockets. 62 households will each pay about 60 bucks a month for one guard patrol half mile radius in the oakmore area of oakland. the smaller police force has led to a rise in home burglaries, according to the neighbors. >> i would say the last six months that it feels like it's gotten noticeably worse in this neighborhood. >> some have criticized the mayor jean quan who does live in the oakmore neighborhood. private patrol is expected to begin in about a week. the white house is poised to strike back against cyberattacks. the obama administration will

we had stormy weather yesterday and snow in the mountains. things settling down. patchy frost in the valleys even out at the coastline some reports of some frost this morning. by the afternoon, it will be a much milder afternoon as compared to yesterday as these temperatures will be about 10 to 11 degrees warmer. and then mostly dry weather it looks like now ahead. that area of low pressure that brought the stormy weather yesterday is sliding down into southern california bringing them some rain and some snow across the mountains. a weak ridge of high pressure trying to build into the bay area just strong enough to help clear us out and dry our conditions out. but we'll see a few high clouds occasionally wrapping over the top of the ridge moving into bay area skies. no delays at sfo. a clear start to the day. the possibility of some thunderstorms there. we have a mix of sun and clouds of rain and some snow expected

in denver. that could cause some delays. dry weather continuing into the weekend and the first part of next weeks. liz. >> okay, thanks, lawrence. now that we're coming getting close to 7:00. we are starting to get busy out there especially at the bay bridge toll plaza. standing up to the foot of the maze. you can see this metering lights are on now we are getting word of new problems on the lower deck eastbound 80 approaching treasure island. one lane blocked eastbound 80

right before the island. to our maps. 880 in oakland. approaching the oak street exit. we have brake lights now as far back as high street. and continuing to grow. so expect delays in those northbound lanes of 880. consider using 580 instead. a quick check of the south bay if we have time for this near that interchange of 280 and the guadalupe parkway. that's a check of traffic. back to you guys. >> parking at san francisco giants home games is about to get more expensive. starting march 4, metered evening parking will take effect near at&t park. for games and events it will cost $7 an hour. the idea is to discourage people from circling the area and reduce congestion.

>> public transit only way to get there. if you are thinking about opening a full bar in walnut creek you will have to wait a year to get it at least. police department says it won't allow any new full bars to open until 15 more officers are hired on the force. the owner one of the last liquors licenses issued in walnut creek doesn't see a problem though with the bars. >> we need that revenue. we need the people. we need the customers. we need all that. we have to provide the customer with what they are looking for, mixed drink or wine or whatever they need. >> the police department has the final say over the new bars because walnut creek is considered to be oversaturated with alcohol licenses. google stock reaches a new milestone. let's check the latest numbers with kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. well over 800. >> that's right. >> reporter: google topping $800 for the first time yesterday. stock is really on a tear over

the past six months. gaining $200. you can chalk it up to android becoming the dominating system for mobile devices overseas and google dominating and searching's display advertising. stocks starting today at just under $807. getting looks at the u.s. economy this morning. new home construction fell to 890,000. however a lot of it came on a drop in apartment construction. single family homes were up slightly and a sign of future activity, building per mitts up 2% from the year -- permits up 2% from the year earlier. the labor department reports the wholesale side of the producer price index was up two-tenths of a percent although it was the first increase since september. you can blame food prices for that. they were up by 7/10ths of a percent. stock market getting off to a flat start this morning after
